In the winter, reaching this wilderness retreat is achievable only via a 40 minute helicopter ride from the town of Williams Lake. Once on site, out the front door guests overlook Quesnel Lake, one of the deepest lakes in Canada. And out back? This is one of my favorite photos from the trip. And I’m honestly not sure if that’s because it’s a good shot or because it’s associated with the memory of how insane the meal was. This ramen shop was in the alley behind our hotel, it had maybe 15 bar seats and was located in what could have been a storage unit. It had no sign, no menu posted, was not listed on yelp or Google and it was easily the best ramen I’ve ever tasted. Here, Mister Walker and Mister Heli sample the goods - which were better than the skiing this day. New York Surf - The most beautiful lines of poetry contain no words at all. After a long day in the water I often feel and see the movement of the ocean when I close my eyes to sleep. There are many activities which I remember after the fact, but surfing is the only one which I feel for hours after the session has ended. We must have driven around for 5 hours checking multiple spots with no waves prior to this shot. Then, just before we threw in the towel, we made one final pass down the beach and Benno said “if we see a set in the next 30 seconds we’re getting in.” And we did. Then the ocean came alive for an hour before the sun went down and the sky lit up as it rarely does making its own effort to help us enjoy every last second of that evening. Enjoyment would be putting it mildly. I caught one shoulder high lefthand runner into the sunset that is forever etched into the deepest corner of my brain. From Forest Bathing, by Dr Qing Li. The concept that humans have a biological need to connect with nature has been called biophilia, from Greek, meaning “love of life and the living world”. The concept was made popular by the American biologist E.O. Wilson in 1984. He believed that, because we evolved in nature, we have a biological need to connect with it. We love nature because we learned to love the things that helped us survive. We feel comfortable in nature because that is where we have lived for most of our life on earth. We are genetically determined to love the natural world. It is in our DNA. And this affinity for the natural world is fundamental to our heath. Contact with nature is as vital to out well-being as regular exercise and a healthy diet. “Our existence depends on this propensity, our spirit is woven form it, hope rises on its currents” wrote Wilson. A body in a bathing suit by a swimming pool, lying motionless on a chaise lounge, is the American image of “having it made.” We should not forget, however, that this is also the image of a dead body… To become an adult means that we no longer have to do the same things we did as kids. Kids run, but we adults walk. Kids climb, but we take the elevator. Kids scoot under bushes, but we go around them. Kids stand on their heads, but we sit on our bottoms. Kids roll on the ground, but we turn on the mattress. Kids jump up and down, but we shrug our shoulders up and down. Kids laugh with joy, but we smile with restraint. Kids are exuberant, but we are careful. Kids want to have fun, but we want to have security. In short, to become a “successful” adult means to cease acting like a kid. It is the customary sign of adulthood to cease functioning like a young person. But this conception of adulthood has an unavoidable result: As soon as we stop using these functions, we lose them. And we lose them because our brain, which is a highly responsive organ of adaptation, adjusts to this lack of activity. If certain actions are no longer part of our behavioral inventory, our brain crosses them off. In a word, it forgets. It’s October, and Long Island is holding onto summer like you might hold a lover in the early hours of a dark morning prior to an upcoming extended absence. There is a sense of both comfort and sorrow that can be felt at this time of year. Each moment made all the more precious and poignant due to its impending expiration. The trees dance in the fall breeze, blissfully unaware of the Nor-easter storms to come that will strip them naked and bare. The sun grows tired, as if it can barely muster the energy needed to reach its place in the noontime sky. The air is noticeably cooler, in a way that surprises and awakens your nostrils when you draw your first breath outside. And then there is the ocean, she is always the last to let go. The ocean holds the warmth of summer like a fond memory kept close to her heart, one that’s looked back on with both a smile and a tear. With fall comes the north wind. Summer and winter collide and several times a year days like this one are produced. Days where nothing is out of place, where each blade of grass sways with a purpose and where gravity loses its effect on the sand in the hourglass. And for a lucky few, these hours can be captured with power of a kite, floating on the breeze above the memories of a summer not yet forgotten. The result is a simultaneous feeling of elation and an almost imperceptible but ever present sadness, the type that is reserved exclusively for moments of complete perfection. Lazy point is a unique lagoon located on a narrow stretch of sand between the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound. When the wind is from the north it blows uninterrupted over the tops of the low lying sand dunes creating a dream worthy flat water slick. However, since conditions line up so rarely, the spot doesn’t see the traffic it otherwise might. There is a growing body of evidence to support cold water emersion as a practice to generate all kinds of physical and mental health benefits. I’m not sure if there are any scientific studies on the addition of blizzard conditions and 6 foot barreling waves into that equation, however I imagine it would prove to exponentially increase the benefits. I am certain that any official study would show elevated Froth levels of all participants. The team at Island Lake has done a wonderful job operating both a winter and summer businesses. Cat skiing in the winter and mountain biking and hiking in the summer.
